Community Service

Graduates of Griswold Public Schools journey into the future as engaged citizens, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and resilient problem solvers. This vision speaks to the essential transferable skills utilized in the world outside of high school that we wish to impart on our students.

They are:

As a result of this vision, and in keeping with current Connecticut State mandates, each GHS student will be required to complete a Capstone Showcase during their senior year.  Students will also be required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of Community Service each year for a total of 40 hours. Completion of the Community Service and Capstone requirements earns you 1 required credit for graduation.

Note – The Class of 2023, due to a BOE Addendum as a result of Covid-19, only has to complete 30 hours. All other classes still have 40 hours. Students who join us later in their high school career will be prorated to 10 hours a year total during their time at GHS. Partial year additions will also be prorated as required.

Community Service is a significant opportunity for students to become active participants and “Engaged Citizens” in their community in a positive way. Community service allows students to acquire life skills, confidence and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most.

All information, forms and directives will be shared in your student’s Community Service Google Classroom and at the Community Service Resources webpage. Parents can track your student’s submitted hours in Infinite Campus. Directions on how to access this information is also available to you in your student’s Community Service Google Classroom.

Please review the Community Service Guidelines on these web pages for more information. Remember–Community Service is not just ‘free-work’ for a business or individual, it is a thoughtful and meaningful connection with our community to engage in service-oriented and civic-minded activities. All community service must be performed for a non-profit organization. If your student has an idea of a different place to volunteer that is not a non-profit, they can request approval.

Please contact Jaselyn Caviness, Community Service Coordinator, at jcaviness@griswoldpublicschools.org with questions regarding Community Service. All completed forms can be submitted to the Main Office.
